A snowy weekend expected for us...  ( on: February 05, 2010, 10:08:40 AM)

and this will be the biggest snowfall since the last one....8 years ago.  Roll Eyes  So of course there is a run for supplies at the grocery store and Home Depot and Lowes! Roll Eyes
And unless it warms up, this snow will be with us for the next two weeks!   I have been walking a lot since my surgery last summer and doing it at the local malls.  Because it has been so cold here and I hate walking in cold weather....why?  because I have to wear too many clothes..... and look like 'nanook of the north'.

Here in St. Mary's County, MD, we have another snow day and the kicker is that it was called and there wasn't any snow!  It's 2:20 eastern standard time and we'd be getting out in about an hour.  I think we could have gone to school today.  The nice thing is that I"m caught up on laundry and school paper work.  In  a little while, I'm making a hearty Tuscan vegetable soup called ribollita.  Yes, I was one of the crazies at the commissary yesterday.   Grin I waited longer in the check out line, which went all the way around the store, than the entire time gathering my groceries.  I usually do shopping on the weekend but am glad I went yesterday.  All the bread was gone!  We have gas for our grill and extra batteries, etc.  I am like so ready for spring!  Wherever y'all are....keep safe and warm!

Here are a few pics of the snowfall yesterday.   This storm literally closed down the City of Pittsburgh and suburbs.   Major roadways, including interstates and highways, have been halted, with numerous motorists abandoning their vehicles on the side of the road.

The storm has caused power outages throughout Allegheny County, leaving 80,000 homes without service. And my middle daughter was one of them.  Good thing she has a fireplace.  The family bunked down in her gameroom for the night.   She emptied her refrigerator and freezer in a cooler and just set it on her back porch.

This is my husband shoveling the walkway out to the street.

I don't walk outside in the winter either, unless it's at least 30 degrees.  The pink tree is beautiful Helen!  A neighbor of ours had planted a lilac bush between our houses over 20 years ago.  It was gorgeous, almost 5 ft tall, but this year's snowfall caused it to split in two.  I was so upset cleaning it up.  My neighbor passed away severl years ago and the bush reminded me of her whenever I saw it.

Well...I've been off for the past two days and will be tomorrow.  I'm thinking we'll have the whole week off.  Admin is stressing state testing which is looming over us and takes place in a month.  Why MD doesn't move it to May is beyond me.  As we say here...things usually don't past the logic test.  But...I've been reading, scrapbooking and my house is clean.  Things have a way of working out for the best.

We're expecting anywhere from 8 inches to 2 ft.  here in the Boston area.  An early dismissal was called for today.  So far nothing,  the storm's supposed to start right around noon.

This morning we woke up to another 4,5 or 6 more inches of snow....can't really tell...because there are a lot of snow drifts. Roll Eyes The temp is 12 degrees and it is very windy outside. Our driveway has drifts knee high and to make this snowfall even more enjoyable....a nice layer of ice beneath all that snow! Lips Sealed Roll Eyes Angry
Two of our grandkids stayed overnight...so we spent the evening playing board games, eating popcorn, drinking apple cider and then hot chocolate.
Today schools are called off again, yesterday no mail delivery, the grocery stores were overrun again making empty shelves.
I am bored, the house is clean, laundry is done, so I am off to the kitchen to find something to bake or cook. Tired of watching and listening to the 'blizzard' news, I can look out my window and see what is happening. Roll Eyes
But I am not complaining and really thankful because there are still people without power and enduring some bad times with the snowstorms.

It's been snowing since noon and we have gotten 2 inches - if that. I'm so happy it wasn't as bad as expected!  Stay safe everyone.

Up here in my particular area we have had a total of 5 inches this year, that's it.  It snowed just before Christmas and washed away on Christmas Day with rain.  And this week they called for a big storm we didn't even get a inch.  While other areas around us got dumped on.  Our weather here has been weird for a few years now.  It must be all those rainbows we get in the summer chasing the snow away.

But it has been cold.  My kitchen water pipes have frozen twice this year so far.  Not fun.

Helen those pictures are pretty.  I love after the snow storm pictures.

I love the pictures Helen, that's the closest I'll get to snow, lol.

It was about 75 yesterday and today is supposed to be 78. It must be a mini heat wave. At least it's warmer at night though, not that it would be cold for you guys who are used to it.  Grin

Been snowing since 7 am.  We've gotten about 5 inches so far.  Shoveled the driveway 3 times already but it just won't end!

We're finally back in school and it was a great day even though we had a two hour delay.  Tomorrow should be normal (whatever that is) and now we're getting ready for state testing.  I can't wait to wear spring clothes!

In all my years on this earth...... I have NEVER seen  or experienced ......so much snow as our area endured  this month.   Just for February we are about to hit our TOTAL WINTER snowfall average. ! Shocked  Which is 40 inches and our total for this month alone..... and it is not over yet we have accumulated  39.4 inches to date. Lips Sealed Roll Eyes Angry Sad
Our schools were off for a week.   Roofs of commercial properties and some private homes have collapsed.   The eaves of our house have  hanging  icicles that are more than 3 feet long.  My husband is worried about water eventually  seeping in the house..... as the gutters are frozen solid and  the weight of them  might even pull away from the roof.   Water is leaking from the backyard porch roof and we will have to replace the outdoor carpeting....it is water-logged.
There was no postal delivery for 3 days and that has never occurred before in my lifetime.
Our rivers are starting to freeze but there is still river traffic.
I honestly dread when all this white stuff melts...because there will be a lot of flooding.   Sad
Every day this week there is an average snow accumulation of 2-4 inches.   And sheesh, the weather man is calling for another snow event Sunday and Monday.   Shocked Angry
I told my husband to smack me upside my head the next time I wish for a White Christmas!! Swear

Oh my god Helen.  WHere do you live? We've had a lot of snow in NE but nothing like that!  Worst I suffered is permanent indoor recess for the schools. The ice on the fields & playground s is a huge liability. That  and  six inches of water in my basement!  Thankfully, my husband bought one of those roof rakes and has been scraping the roof free of snow all winter.  Two years ago, we had to repair the roof because it leaked into the house so much. I feel awful for anyone that is facing huge damage!

Maria I live in Baldwin, a suburb south of Pittsburgh.    Our home is on a hill and the flood prone areas sits below us.  As soon as my camera charges up, plan to take pics of the icicles  hanging from the gutters.
Some of our neighbors are suffering because water is seeping   into their homes...above the windows.   So far we are lucky but  that  really worries my husband...he constantly checks inside the house and  the gutters outside.  Roofers are in great demand today.   And you can imagine it is expensive.   Well hell, they are taking their life in their hands... it is dangerous sweeping snow off roofs.  There have been a couple of deaths already of homeowners falling... attempting to do that job.
It is the Lenten season and quite a few churches canceled their  fish fries  and  bingo's  due to this weather.
I tell you,  I can't wait to see GREEN....like leaves and grass.  We are leaving for Tampa at end of March and will stay for a month.   Hoping by that time the  6 ft snow pile in front of our house will be melted by then.  Roll Eyes

Our house is tiny and over 175 years old.   My husband never actually sets foot on the roof, he can do it from a ladder.  How awful! I just can not believe the sheer amount of snow the whole country is experiencing.

We had snow again yesterday.  We haven't gotten the amount you girls have had out east but it has snowed off and on since October here.  Some of it melts between snows but not all.  Our front yard which is on the north side of the house has about 3 feet of accumulated snow all winter.  It will be May before that melts because it's in the shade all the time.  That's where all my tulips are planted so I will probably have tulips this summer rather than spring.

yessssss!!   Sandy, LOL.
The headlines here in our city and surrounding suburbs in the past two weeks have been:   Roof collapses, school closings, potholes,  complaints still today of streets not cleared.
And now the final insult--Snow  blower bandit sought! LOL   Many of the retailers are out of them....so now police are  investigating instances of snow blowers disappearing from homes.   Sheesh!

Forecast's calling for back to back storms then flurries/rain until Saturday.  At least the rain will melt the snow  but  we're all in for a huge mess in the spring Sad

Your having the same storm I am.  We are getting snow only a inch or two, but 25 miles away from towards Niagara, they since yesterday morning have gotten a foot.  This storm here went through on Monday out towards the Atlantic, swung around Nova Scotia and came back.  They are calling it a Retrograde storm.  We should have the rain tomorrow.
