The Vikings Defiant Bride - a suprising little book  ( on: February 21, 2009, 05:50:43 PM)

Whenever I see Harlequin romances even historical, I immediately think way too tame, not my type of read.  However over the years I've been suprised by some of their books.  I picked up the The Vikings Defiant Bride by Joanna Fulford because it featured some of my favorite themes...a buff warlord viking, and a defiant woman taken in conquest.  And I wasn't disappointed.  This small novel packed a wallop.  It's a bit of a throwback to the older novels.  Although the seduction scenes weren't nearly uh "forceful" enough.  Still we have alpha male Viking scars and all who comes with his brothers and their maurading crew to conquer part of Saxon England.  They are Danes and the come with the idea of taking the land and keeping it.  Making a life for themselves in England.  And we have the Saxon daughter of the ruler of the area.  Her father and brother are both dead and she is trying to maintain her land.  We have all the violence of conquest and the struggles of the conquerers to make a life and the conquered to reclaim their own.  Of course our Viking Warrior (Wulfrum) marries our rebellious lady (Elgiva) and we have the wonderful blend of sexual tension, Elgiva's concern for her people, and a wonderfully arrogant conquering male who doesn't want to fall in love.  In the bed - give me sons type of guy.  In the end it all works out wonderfully with them coming to love each other and the land blossoming and of course the birth of the awaited son.

Yes, it's a throwback.  No it doesn't break any new grounds.  However it's well written and a nice little book to read on a rainy afternoon.  It is less than 300 pages...however I read every word.  It just satisfied something in me.  So I would recommend this book to anyone who likes this very old fashion theme and loves the violent Viking raiders.
