Twilight books  ( on: November 14, 2008, 08:52:22 PM)

My kids are into the Twilight series by Stephanie Mayer (sp)?  Anyone else familiar with these.  I'm going to start the series.  Seems to be a tamer, more pg version of true love from what I've heard.

I'm with you January I'm more of a Jacob fan than an Edward fan. I also can't wait to see the movie this coming Friday. I finished reading the entire series in a week and it has me on edge for the movie because sometimes book turned into movies are not very good.

Two little ones (okay they are preteens) dragged me to see the movie this weekend.  It was quirky, slow moving and had some really funny and tender moments in it.  I liked it.  Since both girls are reading the books, I'm going to pick them up and read them.

about as scary as Dark Shadows was when I was a child.  What I really liked about the movie...no blood, no gore...it was all left to the imagination.  Also no sex, no swear words, no nudity and awesome photography.  Very tasteful  Plus, my dream house.  The house of the vegetarian vampires (funniest line of all time was Edward explaining to Bella that his family was vegetarians...they only drank the blood of animals not humans...kind of like humans eating tofu...loved that line) is all glass up in the mountains among the tree.  Kind of like a modern day tree house.  Loved it.

Having seen the movie once, I would say go see it with your daughters, if they'll let you.

Witchy..I've picked up Twilight and well read it after I'm done with Dragon Queen (Shana Abe third book her dragon series).  I'm hearing some good things about it.  And heck, I enjoyed the Harry Potter books.

I already told her I was reading it after her.  I am not much a of vampire fan in print -- but movies yeah I will go see. However I am curious about it and just what has her nose deep in that ook, while doing everything else.  She today sat and read until 8:10 put the book down and got ready for school... I think she even took it with her too.

A friend of mine brought my girls and her daughter to see it on Wednesday.  They all loved the movie!  I will read the series- after I finish the True Bloods, of course. Marissa wasn't scared at all, pretty much said the same thing you said Adair.  Thank you!

I was surprised at how fast 2 hours went.  When it came to the ending I was like already.  It just did not seem like that much time had gone by.  Good movie.  My daughter is now reading the second book.

Out of desperation I borrowed Twight for SOMETHING to read.   I loved it!!!  I couldn't put it down.  At the end was the first chapter of book #2 and now I can't wait to get it.  Who would have known a basically teen series would appeal to me?

It's appealing to everybody, I know so many people, old, young, kids, adults that are right into these books.

My daughter just loves them, and the music, and the movie, and the sheet music.

Yes she found the sheet music online and gave me her allowance to buy it.  She's ecstatic, she's trying to convince her violin teacher to let them learn the music for orchestra.

She's got some pretty good ammo to help her with this cause... the music Grin, I even think she even transposed from piano to violin to prove her point that it can be done.  She's one determined little girl.

Ahh your daughter is one darling little girl...she'll make a great salesperson someday.

Hadn't thought of Twilight in awhile.  I read the books and am thoroughly hooked and can't wait for the next movie to come out.  I think if a book is well written it appeals to all ages.  And that is what has happened with both  Twilight and the Harry Potter series.  They are very well written so all can read and enjoy...even though they are written as children or teen books.

I watched the movie without reading the book.  Wasn't exciting enough for me but of course my daughter said I should read the book. She chastised me for doing this. So guess I will be reading this series too.

I never did start the series but intend to.  The movie was pretty good.  However, the girl that played Bella wasn't the greatest choice imo.  She was kind of dull and had a flat tone throughout the movie.  Was she supposed to be in that character the  whole time?

I started reading Twilight and from the way it reads, yes she sounds like that so far.

Finish Twilight and I guess I will be #2. The excerpt sounded very good. Much better than Twilight.
I have learned never to see a movie first. Read the book first.

I loved this series!  I was obsessed with it that I read the entire series in less than two weeks.  I would have read it faster but I had to wait for some of the books at the library.  I was so surprised at how hooked I got!  When I was done, I actually missed the characters.  Sad  New Moon comes out on Friday!

Re: Twilight books  ( Reply #22 on: February 27, 2011, 01:34:24 AM)

I know this is resurrecting a dead thread but I have to say something here. I can't believe I'm the only one who doesn't like Twilight and doesn't see the appeal. Okay, I haven't read the books but I can't bring myself to read them either. I did watch the first movie though, so I do know a bit about it and I've read a lot of articles about the books.

I never did start the series but intend to.  The movie was pretty good.  However, the girl that played Bella wasn't the greatest choice imo.  She was kind of dull and had a flat tone throughout the movie.  Was she supposed to be in that character the  whole time?

I think that she fits Bella to a T. Bella is supposed to be this "average" girl who is deeply depressed, morose, and has very little personality. In fact, she needs Edward for that. I can't say that she is a good role model for young girls, or older women for that matter. She is so very unhappy with life and she hates herself so much but when she meets Edward he is the only thing she cares about, not even friends, a hobby or a career. If he isn't in her life then she'd want to die....that's not healthy and that's not a healthy image for girls to aspire to.

I just cannot see why anyone would want to emulate her or have a boyfriend like Edward. A guy who stalks her and watches her sleep and he's supposed to be pretty old, not very ancient, but how can he be attracted to a high school aged girl? Why the hell would he find that appealing? And if I were him, I definitely would not want to attend high school again, even if I were bored.

I also can't take a sparkling vampire seriously... Roll Eyes

I would love other opinions here, I'm not trying to bash anyone who likes the books, I'm really just trying to understand how anyone could like them.

I'm prefacing this comment by saying that I'm not judging any of you ladies for enjoying these books. This is my opinion and it isn't intended to offend or hurt anyone here.

Amen! It's a vampire novel for people who don't like vampires.  Tongue

I was directed to this tumblr recently and have spent a good deal of time reading through it. It's sort of what brought on the resurgence of this thread. The woman who contributes to the blog takes sections of the Twilight series and corrects all of the grammatical and punctuational errors. It's really rather informative. Reading those excerpts has led me to the conclusion that most of the Twilight hate is warranted. I could not believe what I was reading! I was disgusted and saddened by the fact that so many young girls (and grown women) love that utter tripe.

Bella, aside from being one of the biggest Mary Sues I've come across, is a morose shell of a girl. What was it about her that attracted all those boys at school? By her own account she is plain and uninteresting. She has zero personality and is about as fun as a dish rag. Her self-esteem is so low as to be non-existent. She hates everything (except Edward), tries to stifle any positive thoughts or feelings and only comes alive when she's with again, Edward (notice a theme here)? She'd rather be dead than live without him. It brings across the message that girls are nothing without a guy in their life. That is unacceptable to me (and should be to most women). I get that teenage girls can be just as melodramatic, but hopefully not to the extent Bella is. Her obsession love for Edward is her sole purpose in life. How sad does that all sound?

Which brings me to Edward, creepy, controlling, stalker Edward. What's his appeal? That he's able to be around Bella without ripping out her throat (even though that is what he sincerely wanted to do in the beginning of the book: see Midnight Sun in all it's graphic detail) The fact that he breaks into her room at night to watch her sleep? The constant mixed messages and head games?

If that isn't enough to put someone off, the writing should be. I guess for teenagers it's passable (though I was reading Bram Stoker's Dracula and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles when I was a teen). I found Stephenie Meyer's writing to be mediocre (at best) and repetitive. If she has been reading classic literature since she was a young girl and holds a degree in English, she really should be better than she is. I think of Anne Rice and her gorgeous, gorgeous prose and wonder how different/improved the book would be if she had written it instead. She certainly helped me broaden my vocabulary as I was devouring every word she wrote!

I also don't like what I've heard/read about the sexism and racism inherent in the series. What ethnic characters they mention are savages and there is no such thing as a non-white vampire? Once you become a vampire, you are white (except you still retain your "ethnic" features, how convenient). Or how the she thinks werewolves (who are all brown people in her book) are dirty, violent, impulsive, and smelly. All the "brown" vampires are inherently violent and destructive!? There is no amount of explaining or justifying that bullshit. I read it with my own eyes. People seriously don't think there is anything wrong with that? Seriously?!!  Angry

That people can still like/enjoy/love it after all of that depresses me. I...there are no words. Epic FAIL!

Heh, heh...I think we are the only ones that don't like the books/movies on this forum. I know we are late on the subject. I admit to just ignoring it when it first came out but the more I hear about the novels, the more my disdain for them grows.

That tumblr is entertaining and I especially liked the videos of Alex reading the first Twilight book.

Amen! It's a vampire novel for people who don't like vampires.  Tongue

I think that sentence sums it up perfectly.  Grin
